Term 4 Assignment #3 Movie Review

Bowling For Columbine - Review

You have been hired by a national magazine to write a review of the film. You will need to grab the readers' attention with a creative intro. Then summarize Michael Moore's main ideas. Describe the ways he attempts to make the film compelling. Make sure you discuss your opinion of his ideas and his methods. Should someone see this movie? What do you like about it? What don't you like?

You have probably read movie reviews before when you are deciding whether or not you want to see a film. Read a few different reviews, but this time focus on the writing in the review.

 Two sites to consider:

Roger Ebert: http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews

Rolling Stone: http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/reviews

I strongly suggest that you DO NOT look at an old review of Bowling for Columbine. It makes it hard to be original. I've read most of them and remember that copying even a sentence is plagiarism and that would result in a zero.

This review should be three to five paragraphs. First or third person could work.

Term 4 Assignment # 2 Social Media - The New Paparazzi

Emma Teitel's article "The New Paparazzi", published in the November 7, 2011 edition of Macleans, outlines some of the concerns facing today's society regarding privacy and social  media.

Write a response to this article that summarizes the main points and adds your thoughts on the issue.

I would suggest an introductory paragraph that has a dynamic introduction, author, title of the article, and very brief overview of the subject. Your next two paragraphs should detail the two main ideas with at least one direct reference for each paragraph.

Finally add a paragraph that outlines your thoughts. You might agree or disagree with a couple of her points or you may add a thought that is related but that she has not explored in her article. I would suggest you write the entire article in third person point of view but it is not mandadtory.

Consider sticking a picture or two in there to make it look more like an article.

You are freelance struggling writer. I am the publisher of Macleans magazine. I am willing to pay $5000 for the best article about slam poetry (spoken word poetry, performance poetry - whatever you want to call it). MAKE ME CHOOSE YOUR ARTICLE!

Explain what it is and use three different poets as examples. Choose one poem for each poet and summarize it,comment on the mood and/or important elements within the poem. Explain the theme- what's the point? What is the poet's objective with this poem?

Include at least one direct reference for each (worked smoothly into your own sentence of course).

Give your article an interesting title.

A picture or two makes it look much more like a magazine article.

ASSIGNMENT #4 Dialogue - with a couple of cliches thrown in.

Let's practice writing with dialogue and kill two birds with one stone and throw in some cliches-oops!

A good writer strives to be original. Too often papers that I evaluate are filled with cliches, overused expressions. Usually, students don't realize that they are even using cliches. So this writing exercise is designed to not only make you aware of what a cliche is, but to allow you to purge them from your system forever.
Choose one of the following opening lines to create a new scene in the novel and use at least 8 cliches in your paragraph.

You may want to google cliches to find lists from which you can choose.

Italicize each cliche or change the color so that it's easy for me to see how many you have used.
Use third person point of view and try to maintain the style of the author.

Scenario one: George looked up from shoeing the horse to see the outline of Curley's wife in the doorway of the barn. They were alone.

Scenario two: Slim and George sat down at the bar. Slim put a hand on George's shoulder and stated, "Like I said, George, sometimes a guy's gotta."

If you include dialogue (conversation), remember to indent and start a new paragraph withn each new speaker.

The speaker can be indicated at the beginning, middle, and end of the dialogue. You can also indicate the speaker just by indenting. Use all four methods at least twice each. DO NOT use the word "said."

EXAMPLE

George looked up from shoeing the horse to see the outline of Curley's wife in the doorway of the barn. They were alone. She whispered, "What's the matter, George? Cat got yer tongue?"

"What 'bout Curley? 'Spose he walks in," muttered George looking at his feet.

"Well, "she stated, "all's fair in love and war. I ain't never told anyone this, but I don't love Curley. He's dumber than a sack of hammers."

"I ain't so sure this is a good idea."

Curley's wife smiled an ironic smile and asked, "George, are you a man or a mouse?"

An effective way to bring the reader into your experience is to use specific detail. Don't rely on our dominant sense - sight. Include detail that describes smells, sounds, tastes, and physical feelings, (not just emotional feelings.)

This is an IMPORTANT exam! You are not at all prepared. What is it like to walk into that room?Bring the reader into that experience in a prargraph of at least 200 words.

A simile and metaphor here and there can be effective - don't over do it.

Focus on your diction.

Include at least one very short sentence for variety.
